It's not life-threatening, but it is a major pain in the, uh, throat. I use my voice for a living and have had pharyngitis more than a few times.
Antibiotics will usually clear it up in a few days. Best advice--avoid talking, and when you have to--speak softly but don't whisper. It's actually harder on your larnyx.

It is actually an inflammation in the pharynx that causes sore throats. It is not something that is BAD, but there are antibiotics that you can take if it gets as bad as strep. It's a virus. If the pharyngitis isn't that extreme, sometimes it will just go away on its own.
Though not serious the recurrence will give you so many problems.
