I'm a licensed mental healt professional and I have worked with many individuals who have BPD. Typically, this afflicts women who have been thorough some type of childhood/adolescent abuse. It is characterized by a marked instability in mood. Borderlines are often manipulative and fear real or imagined abandonment. Borderlines also tend toward self-destructive behaviors such as drug/alcohol abuse, suicidal threats, attempts or cutting, eating disorders, acting out sexually, etc. I would be very careful in diagnosing BPD. With mental health professionals it is a very "undesirable label" and one I think should be given with a great deal of care. It tends to be very similar diagnostically to Bi-Polar disorder and is often given in conjunction with that diagnosis. I think it is highly important to rule out other disorders such as Bi-Polar, Major Depression, or a multitude of disorders with simialar symptoms. The most recent treatment modality for BPD is something called Dialectical Behavioral Therapy. This was developed by Marsha Linehan and while statistically shows some success, it is not without controversy. This is one of the Diagnoses that raises a red flag to me and makes me "dig a little deeper". Remember that mental health diagnosis is not an exact science so it is vital that you educate yourself. I recommend getting connected with your local NAMI (national association for the mentally ill) chapter or reading the DSM IV-R and other resources. This is not something to take lightly and it is important that you receive an accurate assessment and diagnosis. If you wish to talk more please e mail at jazzy_59602@yahoo.com

My stepdad has it as does my best friend. It's like they are appropriately happy about things they should be, but any little thing will set them into a rage of a fit, throwing, cursing and belittling. It happens a lot in ppl who are codependant and they feel their needs aren't being met. They assume its a good thing to yell and b^*&%h to belittle people into thinking that they cannot help the situation they are in. My step dad has had it for a LONG time, it is really crappy cuz things will be going fine, then a phone call, a look, anything will set him through the roof. Good luck!
