Has anyone had (or know anyone who has) orthodontic headgear as part of braces t!

Question: I'm just curious to know -- because I never have. I've only seen them in pictures and TV.
Answers:
Headgear is still prescribed and is usually only effective in pre-adolescent or younger because that's when your jaw is still growing. The orthodontist will prescribe a headgear when there is a discrepancy between the size of the upper jaw and the lower jaw. The headgear will either hold the upper jaw back to allow the lower jaw to "catch up" or vice versa, pulling the upper jaw foward to match the growth rate of the lower jaw.

Compliance with headgear is not very good however due to obvious aesthetic reasons. However, they do work very well and kids who do wear them when they're supposed to have better outcomes. Those who don't wear them may not fully get to have their occlusion problems corrected and may have to resort to surgery in the future if they need the misalignment corrected.

Back when I had braces I was told to use it but it I only needed to use it at night while I slept. It still sucked though. But it was worth it.
I did..way back in 1977! I think that technique may be obsolete now. (I hope so, anyway..)
