Stress and peer pressure, and not knowing how to handle it.
it can be enjoyable. knowing the risks of flying why do people still fly? or, more appropriately, know the risks of riding a motorcycle, why do people still choose to do so? it's really a matter of one's comfort with risk. while many people agree the the risk/reward ratio for smoking is a clear choice not to do so, others disagree. oh yeah, and don't forget about that little thing called addiction.
Unfortunately I think this has a lot to do with social pressures, and the uncanny ability of the Marketing/ Advertising Industry. They find new ways each year to target younger audiences, making us believe that smoking is a hip, and cool thing to do. They make you forget that in California especially, you are next to an outcast for smoking. As anti-smoking laws have banned employees from smoking anywhere between 20 and 50 feet of buildings. You can no longer smoke in restaurants or bars, though you still find people doing it occasionally. I think also if you have parents who smoke, and grow up in that environment you may be more succeptable to smoking in your early 20's.
