When it comes to the thyroid, it sometimes seems that the symptoms of a thyroid that is underactive (hypothyroidism) or overactive (hyperthyroidism) can be as hard to pin down as the diagnosis itself. Open any medical reference or check out any web site, and you might see very different lists of the symptoms supposedly pointing to thyroid problems.

In my case, after I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism, I started developing a variety of symptoms they didn't mention in the doctor's office. The doctor initially described hypothyroidism as something can make you tired and gain weight. While problematic, these were understandable symptoms. Then my hair fell out. And my periods started coming more frequently, and more heavily. And my skin started flaking. The doctors and articles didn't mention many of some the less common symptoms of hypothyroidism I started to experience So I read more, and I surfed the web. And I talked to other thyroid patients. And I found out that things like hair falling out, and weird menstrual periods, and feeling depressed were all utterly "normal" symptoms of hypothyroidism.

For me, despite the fact that these were caused by my thyroid, I felt that knowing was better than not knowing! Many of us feel so sick that we sometimes worry that we had some incurable disease. I'd rather realize that my thyroid problem still needs some further treatment than worry in the middle of the night that something awful is happening to my body!

Among reputable medical sources, it seems that there is some medical agreement that the following are the basic symptoms of hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism.

Symptoms of Hypothyroidism (An underactive thyroid)

fatigue, exhaustion
feeling run down and sluggish
depression
difficulty concentrating, brain fog
unexplained or excessive weight gain
dry, coarse and/or itchy skin
dry, coarse and/or thinning hair
feeling cold, especially in the extremities
constipation
muscle cramps
increased menstrual flow
more frequent periods
infertility/miscarriage

Symptoms of Hyperthryodisim (An overactive thyroid)

nervousness
irritability
increased perspiration
thinning of your skin
fine brittle hair
muscular weakness especially involving the upper arms and thighs
shaky hands
panic disorder
insomnia
racing heart
more frequent bowel movements
weight loss despite a good appetite
lighter flow, less frequent menstrual periods

But these symptoms are only the tip of the iceberg. There are comprehensive lists of detailed symptosm featured here at the site.

Self control.
There are treatments available.if you leave an overactive thyroid untreated, you can get extremely sick. See a doctor ASAP! Good luck!
you need to see your doctor first of all. If your thyroid isn't kept under control with medication, anything you try to do to regulate weight will be fruitless and maybe even dangerous.
an overactive thyroid will cause you to lose weight. it's one of the main symptoms.

how do you know you've got an overactive thyroid? were you told so by your doctor, or just because you've self-diagnosed yourself? if you really do have an overactive thyroid, you need to be put on some medince, because too mucy thyroid hormone can be damaging to your muscles (one of my profs put a man on thyroid hormone as a clinical trial and he lost lots of weight, but ended up in a wheel chair because of the effects on is muscles--same thing happened to a bulemic woman who was taking it on her own as a weight loss drug).

if you have a problem with weight, you probably have an underactive thyroid. the best thing you can do is see your doctor and get medications that will replace the thyroid horomone that your body would normally be making.
with an overactive thyroid you should be inclined to lose weight --not gain it.are you sure you don't mean hypothyroidism
i think you might mean under active,if you are having weight loss.usually they eat but are hyper,so don't gain.under active, you have trouble loosing, until you get your meds. adjusted.
Over active thryoid should make you lose weight unless you are on medication to treat it. Then sudden weight gain for 5-10 lbs or more withing just a few days is quite common. If that's the case, I would suggest you talk to your endo about trying a different combination of medicines.
