What evidence is there to either support or disprove the "gateway drug"!

Question:
Answers:
Quite a bit of evidence that this is true. Cigarettes, alcohol and marijuana are the gateway drugs--the drugs that introduce children to using mind-altering drugs. Children who use alcohol, cigarettes and/or marijuana have a much higher incidence of substance abuse as adults. Research on adults who are substance abusers found that they have almost always started out on one of the gateway drugs.

Note that most of the pro-marijuana groups oppose this theory because, of course, it is "anti" marijuana. They suggest that the use of one of these three gateway drugs is very common by adolescents, and that most never go on to "harder" drugs. The important part, I think, is their use by very young adolescents or preadolescents. Use very early in childhood is associated with later drug abuse.
