My dad flossed at night. This morning his mouth was completely swollen..what cou!

Question:
Answers:
His gums surrounding his teeth were probably loaded with bacteria. I notices you didn't say flosses, but flossed. He probably has advanced Periodontal disease, notices his teeth feel a little loose and by trying to do 20 years of hygiene in a 20 minute flossing session he gave himself an acute bacterial infection.

That's is why you should floss,
Floss young
Floss consistently

Other Answers:
That's exactly why you should never floss.
STDs
He could have injured his gums in his attempt to floss. Thus the swelling.
Yes, his gums may be infected. See a dentist ASAP.
Odd that an infection would happen so quickly. Did he not floss for a while? Is this a new kind of floss? Is it only his gums that are swollen? Did he use any kind of mouthwash after flossing? Does he have an underlying immuno-deficient condition?

Sudden swelling (especially if it is more than just a localized area) usually means allergic response to the floss, mouthwash, toothpaste, etc. If he is having trouble breathing, get him to a hospital. Otherwise, rinsing his mouth with diluted hydrogen peroxide may help (make sure he doesn't swallow this) by clearing out whatever is irritating him.
Yes,but some flosses that you purchase have a flavor on them.Check what flavor it is he could be allergic to it Or something in the substance they used to flavor it.I would suggest he go to the dentist let them know what happened they can look at it see if he has bruised or cut his gums which may have caused an infection. When flossing you should be careful not to press to hard.Flossing is a must for healthy teeth and free of cavities so.Just see the dentist and dont be so rough when you floss take your time.
It's because of cold
He may have forced a bit of food beneath his gums. Tell him to lightly press around his gums to see if he can make blood appear. If so, chances are his gums are slightly infected and he should use some antiseptic mouthwash. If the problem persists, he should see a dentist.

BTW . you have my admiration for being concerned enough about your father to ask this question. Kudos to you! :))
His gums are swollen due to irritation from flossing. When he flosses, he might be pushing food down into his gums and while he's sleeping, the gums become irritated, thus causing pain. That could cause an infection, if his gums are'nt infected already.
