I had the opposite problem. My doctor kept diagnosing hiatus hernia or flare-ups caused by its scarring. After many years of being ill on and off I visited the surgery and found my usual doctor was on holiday. Seen by another who diagnosed impacted gall stones within two minutes. Weeks later, gall bladder removed, never been sick since - that was ten years ago. The test the doctor who discovered the gall problem was to push his fingers into my stomach under my lower rib cage - not sure which side, but by God it hurt. His diagnosis was immediate quickly followed and confirmed by ultrasound. Fish and chips were my main culprit, followed by sausages, followed by cheese. Cream cakes were like dynamite. Wish you well and good luck.

Most small hiatal hernias don't cause any problems, and you may never know you have a hiatal hernia unless your doctor discovers it when checking for another condition. But a large hiatal hernia can allow food and acid to back up into your esophagus, leading to heartburn and chest pain. Self-care measures or medications can usually alleviate these symptoms, although very large hiatal hernias sometimes need surgical repair.
