A Cap is slightly different from a crown - a cap is fitted without the whole of the tooth above the root being removed, whereas a crown is fitted with the whole of the tooth above the root being taken away first.
A cap will be fitted if the tooth is still "alive", whereas a crown would be fitted if the tooth has "died".
