Emergency surgery due to infection, post wisdom tooth extraction?!

Question: My boyfriend got his wisdom teeth out 3 weeks ago and has been having a lot of problems. Last night his mouth and throat swelled up so bad he was having problems breathing, and this morning he went to the doctor, who immediately scheduled him for emergency surgery, like, now, while I'm sitting here at work freaking out. Has anyone ever heard of this? Is this kind of infection life threatening? What are they going to do to him to fix it?
Answers:
He's lucky he got to the hospital.

They will probably drain his neck of puss from a post operative infection. They make small incisions and put in drain tubes. Put him on IV Antibiotics He should feel better in about four days.

KEEP YOUR SURGEON IN THE LOOP PEOPLE.
Yes you can die from postoperative infectiosn when you try to be a tuff guy,
Any temperature change or swelling get to the phone ASAP

Other Answers:
They are probably going to cut the gums open to let puss from the infection release. This way he will heel better. Don't let him eat anything solid.
My husband had a similar problem that lasted for 2 months. His wisdom tooth was surgically removed. He then developed an infection in the gum which was driving him crazy and he was forced to take pain killers in large numbers. His dentist has treated the infection with antibiotics and some puncturing or digging out and now he is ok. Dont freak out - perhaps your boyfriend should have gone to the doctor before the infection spread to his throat. He surely is in good care now and all will be well soon. Good luck.
it is probably to drain the infection, which would become life threatening if not treated. also, if it so swollen he is having trouble breathing, it could be life threatening
try not to panic hes in the best care. there can be a number of reasons why he has a infection for example dry socket, smoking or even infected nerve. but at least hes having it seen to now hope he'll be ok
