why have I gained 5 pounds in a week by giving up soda and drinking only water?!

Question:
Answers:
I did the same thing, but i was drinking more water than soda. I was retaining the water at first, but I did begin to lose weight and was able to keep it off.It took about two weeks. That was the hardest thing i ever did was to give up soda. Hang in there you will do great.

I suspect that the weight gain may be a coincidence. Keep going with the water instead of soda; in the long run, it will help.
You must be doing something else. Surely you don't live off soda and water. Regardless, your body is just adjusting. If you switched abruptly your body goes into shock from the change and some changes can take place. Keep at it.try mineral water instead.
I feel your pain, every time I give something up, pop cigs or whatever I gain weight.
It may be stress, or water retention. Take vitamins and cut salt intake. You can try a water pill.

MAYBE YOU ARE EATING MORE SWEET STUFF TO SUBSTITUTE THE SODA. EAT BETTER FOODS, AND EXERCISE...KEEP UP THE DRINKING OF WATER, ITS SOOOOO GOOD FOR YOU. SOON YOUL BE FIT
It is only temporary, unless you have started eating more. You need to do the same thing daily with your sugars and calorie intake though..
Because you keep eating the Haagen Daaz.
It is just water weight. Your body is going through a period of adjustment and you just need to ride it out. You should be seeing improvement in the coming weeks.
you might want to also reduce your salt intake as well
you maybe just storing the water
Is likely just water weight gain. It will even out over time and you will likely lose weight as your body adjusts. A five pound fluctuation, especially in women, is normal. Good for you for giving up soda. Try to stick with it.
I gave up soda about a couple months ago and so far I have lost 20 pounds. It will take a while to start losing it might just be the water I go up and down five pounds or so all the time, it's nothing.
get over yourself 5 pounds aint nothin to wine over. your body has to get use to the change.
are you sure youre not retaining fluid? are you sure that youre not eating more of something and gaining weight from that? what about your sodium intake? is it near that time of month? drinking water should never make you gain weight unless you were very dehydrated to begin with. is your urine light or dark? the darker it is, the more water you need.
No, what is happening is that all the sugars in your body from the sodas are fighting for control, and your metabolism is stronger. The water is helping clean out all the impuritys in your body.Cut out salt also and you will feel great ! It will all be ok, once all the sugar is out of your system.CONGRADULATIONS by the way. !
Ive heard that drinking water straight after or during a meal is pretty fattening. A friend of mine also gained the same way you did until she came across an article that mentioned this. My gym instructor says the same OR your body could be retaining water and therefore it will look like you've gained weight.
Dont worry about it too much, im you will begin to lose weight soon. Goodluck!
If you use MSN try visiting their e-diets section. I often come across a number of worth-while fitness tips there. You never know if you'll find something that will work for you there too. All the best. :)
SKILLZ3 MUSTVE BEEN TALKING ABOUT THERESELF....
ANYWAYS..
IF YOU HAVE NOT CHANGED YOUR EATING PATTERN THERE MAY BE NO DIFFERENCE YET.IF YOU HAVE CHANGED YOUR EATING PATTERN, IT SOUNDS WEIRD MAYBE,.BUT IF YOU EAT THINGS LIKE SALAD DRESSING, OR TOMATOES, OR STUFF WITH A LOT OF SALT IN A LITTLE AMOUNT, YOU WILL RETAIN ALL THAT WATER AND IT WILL LOOK LIKE YOU HAVE GAINED WHEN YOU COULDVE LOST A POUND, OR JUST STAYED THE SAME. SERIOUSLY, I WOULD WEIGH MYSELF AND IT WOULD BE LIKE 135, THEN AFTER I ATE A BIG SALAD WITH ITALIAN DRESSING AND DRANK WATER OR SOMETHING, I WOULD WEIGH MYSELF AGAIN IN THE MORNING, AND IT WOULD BE A GAIN OF UP TO 5 LBS SOMETIMES, I WOULD LOOK AND BE LIKE I CAN NOT GO FROM 135 TO 141 OVERNIGHT..SO I CAUGHT ON PRETTY FAST.

Consider what else you have been eating and drinking since giving up soda. You MAY have unconsciously begun eating something else to make up for the decrease in sugar that has resulted in stopping drinking soda. Maybe try writing a food diary for a week - everything you eat and drink - it may surprise you and you may discover the culprit if you have indeed begun eating something else.

Make sure you increase your exercise as well - that will help burn off the calories you're taking in through the day.

It could also be that your body is reacting to the change in diet. A similar thing happens when people stop eating (or begin eating less) to lose weight. It actually slows the metabolism because the body thinks that it is starving and does everything possible to hold onto fat cells in order to help it survive.

If you're really concerned, head off to your doctor and ask their advice. They may run a blood test or something to see if something stands out. Perhaps consider consulting a nutritonist or a dietician - they could help design an eating plan to optimise your weightloss plan. However the key is decreasing your calories in and increasing your calories out - if your calories out don't exceed the ones coming in, you won't lose weight. You may slow your weight gain by decreasing your intake, but you need to boose the output as well.

Beliving that you CAN achieve your goal is the first step. Without that, your chances of success are greatly lessened.

GOOD LUCK.
