My legs, ankles and feet swell day or night. I don't drink, smoke or do drugs. W!

Question: I have had edema (swelling) in my legs for the last two years. No doctor has been able to specifically determine why. I have been told it is 'allopathic'. Whether I sit, stand, or lie down, the swelling is always the same or becomes worse. My skin is so tight it is uncomfortable and sometimes painful. I have a prescription diaretic, nova-hydrazine, but do not like taking them.Travelling by plane is now impossible due to the extreme swelling which occurs as a result. Car rides are becoming difficult, too. My feet go numb within minutes. I am otherwise in good health, and exercise every day, walking at a speed of 4 miles per hour for an hour a day on my treadmill. I have excellent heart-lung ratio. I have been tested for diabetes (my dad has it) but it is negative. I am only 41 years old and am worried that this condition will seriously debilitate my life. I do have Sacroilitis due to Ankylosing Spondilitits, but am not sure how this is linked. Any suggestions?
Answers:
Since Ankylosing Spondylitis is in the family of rheumatic diseases, which include rheumatoid arthritis, I am guessing that part of the swelling may be due to your condition. However, my main concern is how much salt is in your diet. If you have a salt laden diet, then this will greatly effect the amount of swelling you have. I would suggest that you schedule an appointment with your doctor to go over your medicines (some medicines can cause swelling in some people),have a complete physical, and blood work done. Although you don't like taking the diuretic, I would further recommend that you continue to take it, so that you don't develop fluid around your heart. I hope you and your Doctor find the answer soon and that your will be comfortable again. Good Luck.

I'm not a doctor but cutting salt out of your diet may help a bit- also baby oil is great for keeping the skin soft when it is swelling.
You have my sympathies, it is extremely uncomfortable. I am assuming that the Dr has prescribed diuretic tablets if not celery is a natural diuretic and can be taken in tablet form.Have they tested your kidneys, is your bladder voiding sufficiently. Keep at the to find out what is causing this, and although you probably wont feel like it I think you need to keep your water intake up to assist with flushing out the toxins in your system. Good luck
It could be a thyroid condition..my grandmother has it.. she was in the hospital on her death bed before diagnosed with the same symptoms as you.

just a suggestion
Has your doctor considered compression stockings? I work at a place called Hanger Prosthetics & Orthotics and we see a lot of patients with edema. Compression stockings come in a variety of lengths, strengths, colors, etc. You might also want to ask your doctor to send you to a vascular doctor. There may be some circulatory problems that may be causing the edema. You don't say, but are you overweight? I don't think that can cause edema, but it may be a contributing factor. These are all merely suggestions, your doctor can help you better as he/she has all your background information. Hope you can figure this out.
ok,you are a woman, this condition happens in some woman.
it is becasue of your specal formation of collagens probably.
but it is not a sever problem.if it is write and i will consider it carefully.
At the end of the day, instead of sitting down or even laying down, ride an excercise bike. If the blood is pooling, then get movement! Increase circulation. Try it for two weeks and you will see. Too bad if you are tired or have been standing all day, we are talking about your health! Get off your feet, but keep moving!
I feel for you ! Around 3 years ago, I started to develop edema as well, including numbness. My doctors felt it was just the normal water retention common in women, but honestly, only YOU know when there's something wrong in your body. I was relentless basically. I refused to just take "water retention" as the answer, so I consulted with a couple of other physicians, and to make a long story short, was diagnosed this year with LUPUS, which is an auto-immune disease that causes swelling in the joints. I am hoping this is not the case for you, however my point is to always listen to your body. If you truly feel something is wrong, find the answers. Good luck and stay strong =)
This can occur with many conditions. High blood pressure is a consideration. Also, Ankylosing spondylitis is aasociated with inflammation and joint problems of the feet and ankles.

Also, improper functioning valves of the veins may cause swelling.
