Question:
Answers:
The doctor doesn't actually perform the test. The blood is drawn at his office and sent to a lab. The doctor receives the results in a few days in the form of a written report.

blood test
they will make u not eat or drink anything after midnight one night the next morning u will get up and go to the dr and they make u drink a really sugar liquid then prick your finger and they repeat that process for about 6 hrs every hour and that will tell them
THEY FIRST DO A RANDOM FASTING BLOOD TEST.
By looking for evidence of abnormal glucose handling.

Currently, the diagnostic standard is more than one fasting (two+ hours since eating anything) blood glucose level of 126 milligrams / deciliter. Or a reading of more than 140 mg/dl even after a meal. Or poor handling of glucose given during a fasting glucose tolerance test. All of these can be done in a doctor's office using portable test equipment, in five minutes. And if you have a friend with diabetes and their own glucose meter, can even be carried out at home, taking careful precaustions not to come in contact with anyone else's blood. New lancet, and so on.

Indications of diabetes, and reasons to investigate further, include an HB1Ac reading corresponding to sustained average values of more than 130 mg/dl -- more or less (a lab test only). Or excessive drinking or unrination or both. Or otherwise unexplained problems with vision. Or mood changes or fainting or odd sweating or.

Wikipedia.org articles on diabetes mellitus for overviews and links. Some are written by physicians and scientists and are more technical than others. See mendosa.com for general information and pointers to other sources. NOTE: There is much fraud and snake oil about diabetes as it is common, there is no cure, and it's a real pain. Be careful in what you believe about this disease for much of it is dangerous nonsense. At worst, you can loose toes, feet or a leg, even your life, if you bet on the wrong magical horse in the diabetes race. It's clearly (several large studies with a very clear result) that keeping your blood glucose levels as near normal sa possible will reduce chances of amputation, blindness, kidney failure, etc to essentially normal levels.
There are several tests that will be performed if you suspect you are diabetic or if you have experienced common diabetes symptoms. Your doctor will draw blood for different tests, such as a fasting blood glucose level (when you have been without food for around 10-12 hours), a Hemoglobin A1c test (to show an average of how your sugars have been acting over the past 120 days), triglycerides / cholesterol levels. Also, your doctor will likely require a urine sample to test for loss of sugar / protien in the urine.

My Type I was diagnosed through a urine test, but that was 23 years ago so maybe it's different now.
