why do people have cold sores?!

Question:
Answers:
Cold sores are caused by the Herpes Simplex virus. There are two varients of this virus: Type I causes cold sores, while type 2 causes genital herpes. Both varients of the virus live in the nerve cells of the body. Once a person is infected, he/she remains infected for life even though there may be no further eruptions of blisters.

The "trigger" to bring the virus to the skin surface of the lips (for type 1) or genitals (for type 2) is not known. It is thought that stress, illness, skin damage, or menstrual cycle are triggers.

Infection is through direct contact with the virus. This includes kissing and oral sex. It should be noted that the virus can be passed even though there is NOT an active eruption site. Through a process called "shedding" the virus can be on the surface of the skin without being active.

The virus is NOT airborne. It is not transmitted by mosquitos or insect bites.

There is no cure for viral infections, including cold sores or genital herpes. Your doctor can prescribe antiviral medications that can shorten the duration of outbreaks, and can reduce pain. The best treatment is prevention. Wash your hands, and avoid contact with eruption sites.
