Diabetes occurs when your body cannot properly process sugar, either because your pancreas is not producing enough insulin or because your body cannot use the insulin that you produce efficiently because of some metabolic problem. Because of that, your blood sugar level gets too high, which can cause a myriad of health problems.

Here is a good link to a description of the symptoms of diabetes and an explanation of the different types of diabetes. But keep in mind that some people with diabetes might not exhibit any symptoms, which is why your doctor will normally check your blood glucose level as part of an annual checkup. If diabetes runs in your family, or if you are overweight, especially if the extra weight is carried in your belly, you should make sure to have your blood glucose level check regularly.

Eating sugar does not cause diabetes, but sugar and refined carbohydrates (white flour products) are not good for diabetics. Diabetes can sometimes be triggered by other medical conditions, although stress alone would not normally be a causal factor.

If you have any of the symptoms listed for diabetes, particularly excessive thirst, frequent urination or unexplained weight loss, you should get to your doctor soon to get checked out.

The 'classic' definition of diabetes is when one's bood glucose levels remain above 140mc/dl or one's hemoglobin A1C is continually above 7.

Diabetes is caused by either the pancreas not making enough insulin, or the body's cells developing 'insulin resistance' over a long period of high carb diet and low exercise levels.

In most cases, simply restricting carbohydrate intake to 100 grams or less daily, combined with daily exercise strenuous enough to make one breathe hard, will drop the blood glucose levels below the danger point, and no additional medication is necessary. But one MUST make a long-term commitment to lifestyle change.

Un-controlled diabetes can cause heart disease, loss of limbs, blindness, stroke and lung problems.

DANGEROUS!
