What therapies have worked for people like me with borderline personality disord!

Question: Hi, I would like to hear from people who have overcome the nightmare of B.P.D. to live relatively normal, productive lives. THANK YOU
Answers:
Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) works best for Borderline Personality Disorder. DBT is a treatment designed specifically for people with self-harm behaviors and parasuicidal and suicidal behavior. It involves individual therapy, a skills group, and phone coaching.
"Clients receiving DBT, compared to TAU (Treatment as usual), were significantly less likely to drop out of therapy, were significantly less likely to engage in parasuicide, reported significantly fewer parasuicial behaviors and, when engaging in parasuicidal behaviors, had less medically severe behaviors. Further, clients receiving DBT were less likely to be hospitalized, had fewer days in hospital, and had higher scores on global and social adjustment."
Here are some links on finding a DBT program and more info on DBT. The Dialectical Behavior Therapy Frequently Asked Questions section of the last link is very informative.

I cannot say that I have recovered from BPD but I have come a long long way. I have a full time job, I go to school full time, I stopped cutting about a year ago, I have even gone on to have a healthy relationship. Some of the thoughts and behaviors pop up, often, but I have learned how to deal with them. Finding a therapist is very important to recovering from BPD, as I am sure you know, trust is a huge issue with borderlines, so trusting a therapist can take a long time. But when you find one that you can trust it can work wonders. Having a good support system is always helpfull but not always possible. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy is also helpfull. It helps Borderlines be more "in the moment" and helps deal with the emotional instability. It also teaches Interpersonal skills, which are difficult for Borderlines as well. Recovery is definetly possible, but it is a long road. One that is definetly worth the journey. The most important thing that I learned along the way is to stop judging and belittling myself, and to trust myself. But everyone is different, and everyone handles things differently. Find a therapist that works for you, one that you can trust, just remember that trust doesn't come immediatly, it is worked at. Good Luck.
