Do anti-depressant make you gain weight?!

Question: Ive been on 75mg of Zoloft for almost a year and Ive noticed an increase of weight. Ive never been at this weight ever. Could it be the medication? Please i need answers
Answers:
Zoloft or any of the other SSRI's should not cause a weight increase. Could you have possibly reduced your physical activity during your period of depression?

I've found that some do for me. That weight was some of the hardest weight I ever had to lose. Tell your doctor and maybe they can offer alternatives or offer some kind of help. I hated it because the purpose of the meds was to make me feel better and all I did was stop worrying about everything else and worry about getting fat.
I can't answer for zoloft, but I lost weight on Prozac.
Yes they can in some cases. Everybody reacts differently to these or any drugs, so even if it is written that a drug may not cause most people to gain weight, it could happen to someone else.

You should speak to the doctor who prescribed it for you and see if they can change it to another drug. HOWEVER, and this is really, really important: You cannot just stop taking the drug. You have to be weaned off of it first to allow your body to adjust. If you just stop taking it whatever the drug is treating (anxiety or depression or whatever) could get worse. They may slowly wean you off the Zoloft and slowly introduce your body to another drug at the same time. So follow doctors orders.

Steer clear of Paxil however! I gained 45 lbs on that drug several years ago (I weighed 185, when my normal weight has always been - as an adult female - 140, and I look great then)and I felt like a beached whale. I spoke to my doctor and she weaned me off of it, while introducing me to another drug, and I lost the weight. I have kept it off since.

Please talk to your MD!
