A tunneled catheter exits the skin at a point a few inches distant from where it enters the vessel. These catheters are frequently implanted when a person will be using the catheter for a period of weeks or months, especially if he or she will be living at home, rather than in a hospital.

For example, a person might have a dialysis catheter with the distant end in the jugular vein, which is in the neck. The part of the catheter that is external might be in the upper chest. There is a part of the catheter that is tunneled under the skin that connects the two parts.

The purpose of a tunneled catheter is to avoid letting germs from outside the body have easy access to the inside of the body. In the example of the dialysis catheter, an infection developed where the catheter comes out of the body, it could be treated before it traveled to the jugular vein.
