I have seizures, I take 1500mg of Depakote daily, why do I still have break thro!

Question: I take 1500mgs of Depakote daily, but still have break through seizures about 2 to 3 times a month. Anyone know why?
Answers:
I have had epilepsy for 10 years and take EPIVAL. My doctor did an EEG on me once, didn't find any weird brain activity, put my meds down to 2 pills per day instead of 3, and, like you, I relapsed. I went back to him, and he later found abnormal brain activity afterwards. I think your level of medication is too low if you still do seizures. I recommend you see your neurologist who will be in a better position to tell you exactly what's wrong. Good luck,

You really, really, really, need to seek the opinion of the neurologist who prescribed the Depakote, not God-knows-who-is-answering-you on the internet. Please, for your own safety.
I take Depakote to, only about 500 mg these days. have been an epileptic for 25 years. I have petit mal or clonic seizures, where i feel like i jerk and just lose my balance for a quick second, others don't even realize it but of course i do. This happens a lot around my period time as my seizures are very heavily hormonally influenced.do you notice that with yours? sorry i guess you didn't say whether you are male or female so forgive me if you are male. I have had times over the years where the seizures breakthrough even on medication. My neurologist has adjusted my medicine and also weight loss or gain can make a difference. Also, over medication can make a difference. You know the drill, so can not eating right, not getting enough sleep, hormonal changes, or stress. Also, at one point the doctors told me that after awhile your body can need a change. I was on Dilantin and Zarontin in my early 20's they went toxic in my system.what fun that was. NOT. Thats when i went to depakene but it hurt my liver. I have been taking Depakote for about 15 years but i do have the breakthru little seizures. No grand mals in 11 years..Thank the dear Lord! I understand completely how it feels when those seizures rear their ugly heads!

My doctor also switched me to Depakote ER (extended release) and i take one more pill a day right before period time when estrogen triggers the seizures. This might help you because he said the other Depakote wasn't lasting as long as the ER. See your doctor and ask for advice. hope all goes well for you.
I have had epilepsy for 20 years[grand mahls] and have had to shift through 5 different medications[ one of which was Depakote] to find one that is effective w/o any side effects. How long have you been on this perscribed dose? Perhaps it's time to either change meds, dose,or add another one in conjunture with Depakote.
Epilepsy is so illusive-it could be anything, and at the same time be nothing at all- it's best to talk with your nuerologist.
Good Luck.
