Gastric bypass surgery creates a smaller stomach "pouch" that holds a very small amount of food ( usually 2 OZ) after surgery. Because you are full with so much less food your daily intake of food is greatly reduced causing your body to use the fat you have stored to burn for energy. Also, with gastric bypass, a portion of your intestine is bypassed and does not digest food causing whats called malabsorption. This means that your food that you eat is not being completely absorbed by the time it passes though your system and not all the fat and calories are absorbed by your body ( or the nutrients) Hope this helps, please e-mail me if you have any other questions about gastric bypass I would be happy to help
