HIPAA and Regional Health Information Organizations (RHIO)?!


Question: Accross the country there are these RHIO organizations looking at linking data together. What are the HIPAA results.

Here is an example.
Patient X comes into the ER at hospital A. Hospital A employee looks up patient X's medical history at Hospital B to provide the nessesary care.

Is this ok under HIPAA regulations.

If hospital A and B are part of the same hospital network and the patient has given consent, then yes. Also, if the information is needed for appropriate care and patient is unable to give consent, then YES it is allowed.
