Why is it better to eat a salad before a meal instead of after?!

Salads fill you up and are healthy, therefore you won't eat as much of the main course. Usually, if you eat the salad after dinner, it's to cleanse your palate.

It is my understanding that it is actually healthier to eal a salad "after" your meal. I hav eheard that it aids in digestion.
It isn't really that it is better, just that is the way its usually done, salad and then meal.but you can eat it however you want, meal then salad, bite of salad , bite of dinner..but hey did you know that lettuce doesn't break down and digest it sits in your stomach and rots and then the body eventually gets rid of it..:)

I eat my salad after my meal or between courses to cleanse my palette.
Basically because it eats up calories at the beginning of the meal..however, a high calorie salad defeats the purpose..

Does someone know this answer? My impression from when I was a kid was that you move from the healthiest foods to the sugary-fatty stuff. So salad, assuming you don't drown it in dressing, is very healthy, while brownie hot fudge sundae is very sugary and fatty.

One snobby person wrote that only the working class would think that anything sweet would be an acceptable appetizer.

But if we really wanted to rationalize it, I suppose we could say that we are getting a good dose of dietary fiber first in order to aid in digestion of the rest of the food.
