I admire your goal, but before you get started need to look at more factors than just your weight. Did your doctor tell you that you are overweight? Do you know your body fat percentage? How old are you? Are you a man or woman?

These and other factors all are important when a person decides to lose weight. What people are really saying is, "I want to lose fat." Nobody wants to lose 30 pounds of muscle while keeping all their fat.

Start by figuring out how much excess fat you have. Your doctor or local gym will be able to figure that out for you in a matter of minutes with a fair degree of accuracy. Once you know how many pounds of excess fat you have, consider the suggestions below.

1) Forget the quick-fix diets. Most 24-48 hour diets cause you to lose weight in the form of water or feces (diuretic and laxative diets). They are not real diets because the fat stays.

2) Avoid extreme diets such as the pure protein diets. While some of these are very effective, the damage they do to other organs and tissue is hardly worth the weight loss.

3) Consider a well-rounded diet such as the South Beach Diet. While Phase One of the South Beach Diet is extreme, it is only short term. This diet, in particular, has many well-rounded and delicious meals in the latter phases of the diet that make it possible to live with in the long run.

4) Whenever possible, avoid junk food and processed food.

5) ABOVE ALL, EXCERCISE. There is more information on the medical benefits of regular exercise than I could read in a lifetime. Although many fitness gurus who are trying to sell books will tell you their plan works with 20 minutes, 3 times a week, I recommend a significant amount more than that to my clients. Consider this, 20 minutes X 3 times a week = 1hour per week. A week has 168 hours. Using the above exercise schedule, you would be physically active less than 1% of your time. It doesn't take a genius to realize that this is not really enough.

Here is the good news: anything that gets your heart pumping well qualifies. Anything from walking up a hill to extreme sports could fall into that list.

These are some basics that should get you started. You should always talk to your doctor about starting a new fitness program before you get started, especially when your goal is to lose such a significant amount of fat.

Best wishes, and again, congratulations on your decision to get in shape!
