Actually, I think women are more prone to obesity, because of the layer of fat just below the skin. However, men do seem to be far more prone to the "beer belly" syndrome. I think obesity is mostly in the genes. Mine are Pennsylvania Deutch: have you ever heard the line, "A fat wife and a full barn never did any man harm." or "I sit broad, don't I?" We have been accepting being fat ever since we stopped working hard enough to turn it into muscle, since PA Dutch food is SO fattening, and tastes too good to pass up.
