What is acoustic neuromas? How serious is it? What is the chance of getting it!

Question: I haven't confirmed that I have it, but I got all the symptoms. Going to MRI next week. Did some research on the web. So worry.

Hi

The answers, very good ones (including bibliography) you can get in this place.

Better than me writing.

Little resume

1) Acoustic neuromas, also known as vestibular schwannomas, are non-malignant tumors of the 8th cranial nerve.

2)"unfortunately the chance of hearing being preserved after acoustic neuroma surgery is slight. Nedzelski and colleagues recently reported that only about 16% of patients had "serviceable" hearing in the follow up interval after "hearing preservation surgery". (Lin et al, 2005). While hearing may be "preserved" immediately after surgery, it usually deteriorates in most within a few years.

This Website will benefit you well. http://anausa.org/

Click on the Support Group for a forum of people like me and yourself. I hope you find out what you have is a symptom of something minor and that is not an Acoustic Neuroma. I had a Acoustic Neuroma and surgery July 2003. Try to realize that you have a benign brain tumor, it is operable, not cancerous, not without pain(Surgery)usually, but may be surprised how well you do afterwards. Everyone is different. It's can have several outcomes depending on the treatment you receive and/or how well you are informed with your decisions. Start with this website and forum. You will find a wealth of information too numerous to write here.

As Benign Brain Tumors go, I've been told it is very rare that you even have one, but it is one that is common. Normally, effects people middle age or older. Depending on your health right now, it is very survivable, but you will experience changes in your life as you now know it both mentally, physically, and possibly, ..spiritually.

Get your house in order before the surgery or treatment you choose. I chose Micro-surgery and I don't regret it.
