Question: Is it normal to have menstrual cramps so severe and strong that they cause your bowels to move? Today was the third day of my period. I have week-long periods and I usually have cramping for the first three days. My cramps were so strong that they caused my bowels to move! Some were painful, others weren't really painful. just very strong. I was on the toilet for about an hour!
Is this very abnormal or does it happen sometimes? I'm a teenager. almost 20, and I've never been pregnant.
Answers:
The muscles of the uterus and intestines are called smooth muscles. They are close together in your abdomen. My doctor told me that when one is contracting it can and often does cause all other smooth muscles it is in contact with to begin contracting as well. So yes, this can/will happen with cramps during menstruation.

Other Answers:
Yes, it is normal.

As we get older, our bodies go through changes, especially in our early 20's.

The best thing you can do is to take Ibuprofen (Specifically Ibuprofen, not Advil or Midol) every 4 hours at the first sign of your period. Ibuprofen will inhibite the production of a certain hormone that causes the cramping in your uterus, and will provide you with relief.

Additionally, try a hot heating pad to ease the cramps.

If your cramps continue to worsen, you may consider getting temporarily on birth control, as this will make your periods shorter, lighter, and less painful.

Been there!
i think it is not normal, but u should visit a doctor that can help u with the cramps.
I had almost the same problem when I was your age.debilitating cramps. Unfortunately the only cure they had for me was to put me on birth control.that was some years ago and now they have low/lower dosage birth control designed for just that reason.heck, the Doc can give you Seasonal which makes you have a period only twice a year. You may be embarrassed to speak to your gyno about this but, he/she has probably seen everything and it is best to get him/her involved to start a course of treatment. If you don;t have a gyno/can't afford one.planned parenthood is a low cost place to start. Nobody should have to suffer through cramps alone : (
Ms. Luca says it's normal..but what is normal for one person, isn't normal for another. By all means, you should see a Dr. There's a chance you might have fibroids which can extend the length of your periods, cause heavy bleeding AND pain. You might not have a choice but to take meds.
