Alcohol
Are you talking prescription? Reductil (that's what it is called in Australia) worked well for me.

The truth is though that ultimately you need to rely on yourself to make the changes and not some pill.

I stopped the pill and went to the Body For Life program. I lost 50lbs and have kept it off for over 3 years. Take a look at the website.

Sadly it is only diet and exercise that make the difference. I wish I'd learned that sooner, I would have saved myself a ton of money and a lot of wasted hours of effort on diets that don't work in the long run. Good luck to you! Email me if you want some encouragement or advice :0D

GOsh, I wish it were so simple. I am going to assume here that you want to lose weight and that you are attributing your weight issue to overeating. I also assume that there isn't a metabolic, disease nor medication issue at fault. THe best medicine we have is the human mind. Our own mind can produce some of the strongest meds ever known, and in the case of weight it is usually the best one around. THe appetite supressing medications all carry some wicked heavy side effects that make will and desire look pretty good in comparison (rectal leakage, gas, infection, headache, arythmia..).

However, as book below discusses, there is not just one biomechanism that accounts for hunger. Humans have evolved with several different ways of making us eat, or enough to make it difficult to stop with one easy pill. Until recently in human history, eating enough was less likely than it is now in an industrially developed society. In agrarian societies, physical work, and the work and energy required to live one's life, made getting enough fuel for our bodies more important than checking the desire for food. THere was some recent research which proposed that we are "programmed" genetically to eat more when food is plentiful to build up a store for the shortage which was sure to follow. WHat I learned from this book (The Hungry Gene by ER Shell) is that there is no one simple answer to overeating. It is a complex issue with lots of answers and solutions.

So, in short, there is no such medicine. But, there are alot of things you can do to change your habits, that may result in you eating less.

1. Keep a food diary. It is often an honesty-check that will help trigger in your mind a will to eat less that is hard to beat.
2. WHen making or ordering a sandwich, make it a half sandwich. Always choose a small or medium. STOP drinking sodas and juices which have lots of calories and no "chew"-appeal. Instead of apple juice, eat a glass of water and an apple. A baked apple with a sugar substitute or even a half tsp. of brown sugar is much more satifying than a sugary soda and has way, way less sugar (calories really - I have nothing against sugar per se, it just has alot of empty calories and may help create factors metabolically that cauise oveeating)in it.
3. Drink a warm beverage or have a hot broth based soup before the main part of a meal (if your at work, try hot vegetable juice like v8 or tomato).
4. Try eating alot of fiber before a meal. I prefer soluble fiber to insoluble.
5. Eat more slowly and with more attention. Try not to be walking around when you eat. If you have an incredible craving, and yet you know you have eaten enough and don't feel physical hunger, try waiting ten to fifteen minutes, doing something else, to satisfy the craving. Drink water or hot v8 juice. Keep craved foods out of the house such that you will have to go out to satisfy a craving. Chances are you'll forget the craving.
6. Look at portion sizes on a package and eat the appropriate portion.

7. Never use the words "I can't eat less," or "I can't diet successfully." Other people have: people who aren't perfect, people who are smart, dumb, every race, every body type, neurotic, anyone can. You can cut portions because you are the only one who decides what goes into your mouth. If it feels too drastic to cut down to an appropriate portion right away, taper it down over a week or two. You are in this for the long haul, for new habits.
8. Get interests that don't involved food and which keep your hands and mind occupied. Needlework requires that your hands stay clean and your mind focused. Plus, exercise more through everyday movement if you don't like to exercise conventionally.

9. Appetite satiation is largely a matter of changing a habit. You change bad habits by replacing them with good habits that work for you.

10. DO NOT allow the bread basket at table. If you have space in your plan for a bread at dinner, take one and ask the server to remove it. WHen did bread become an appetiser anyway? If you are dining with others, ask them to please keep the bread at their end of the table.

I have lost over 70 pounds and kept it off for fifteen years. When I look back on how, it always comes down to having changed small habits over time. I used to eat bags of cookies and boxes of candy. Now, having developed new habits I can have ONE cookie. Bread without butter, is really no less satisfying than bread with butter. It's okay to have these things, you just need to have them in smaller amounts or less frequently.

So, if this wasn't what you were asking about - never mind.

There are some good ideas here. If you want an over the counter medice, try dexatrim. My husband uses it. The best way to lose weight though, is to make changes in you life that you can live with. Take one thing at a time. Take a walk after dinner while everyone is having dessert for example.
