Answers:
It's called not wanting to be responsible for ones actions or alcoholic.

when i took psychology there was actually sleeping disorders where one man feel asleep drove to the in-laws and brutally murdered them with a tire iron and kitchen knife and woke up in his car. another case a 15 year old girl shot her entire family in her sleep. but your friend sounds like he's got some drug problems like PCP or LSD
It could be a dissociative disorder. Dissociative Amnesia is a possiblity. Also, malingering, factitious disorder or substance abuse. That will be $150.00, please. Cash.
There are many reasons your friend could be blanking the violence. The best way you can help him is to direct him to a Mental Health Agency for an evaluation. A professional can diagnose and help him learn to control the episodes. The National Alliance for Mental Health can help YOU deal with his problems too. NAMI is for people with mental health issues and their friends and families.

If he is not a chronic alcoholic he must be suffering from MANIAC-DEPRESSIVE PSYCHOSIS.The condition can be successfully treated by drugs by a psychiatrist.
First of all, almost every corner of America has a health department that adresses issues ranging from STD testing to mental health disorders, and their services are based on income, which sometimes translates to "free" or "make payments". Money, therefore, may not be an obstacle. Also, if a person is a danger to himself or others, which your friend most definitely is, then he can be committed by family and friends for evaluation and treatment. He may not want to do this, but think about what it could be preventing - if he blacks out and becomes violent, what if he kills someone one day? Wouldn't it be better to get help now than go to prison? What if he kills himself? Accidents happen even when we KNOW what we are doing, and the risk is amplified when we don't know. Second, this is known as dissociative amnesia and indicates major underlying mental health problems that, I'm sorry to say, will not go away without professional help.
My brother in law does the same thing. he chocked his wife once! He recently was dignosed as being a bipolar (formally refered to as a manic depressive)

It sounds like he is going through a manic episode (bipolar) get state mental insurance he NEEDS TO SEE SOMEONE & GET ON MEDS. GOOD LUCK. PS MY HUSBABNDS FAMILY ARE ALMOST ALL COUNSLERS . THEY DO PRO BONO WORK, WHERE ARE YOU FROM? MAYBE THEY CAN HELP.. HE NEEDS HELP BEFORE SOMEONE GETS HURT.SERIOUSLY,PLZ, PLZ SEEK HELP!
