Yes, as you can die from just about anything. My brother-in-law (BIL) has it, had a rupture in his intestines that nearly did him in; the doctor was surprised, which tells me, near-death from it is probably rare.
Hang in there, there's new therapies coming. My BIL is okay now; it's been 10 years or more. In fact, he's overweight.
