I have had tmj for years and years, I was told to have surgery and I opted not to and researched this extensively! A mouthguard can be made at the dentist to stop night grinding, it can be soft or hard. You can do jaw strengthening exercises to help the muscles because usually the muscles cause the joint problems unless you have degenerative bone loss problems. Alot of people tense their jaw and don't know it. One thing to do is to keep your teeth apart, then put your tongue to the roof of your mouth behind your front upper teeth, it's impossible to clench your jaw when your tongue is like that, also another good stop clenching thing to do is blow air out of your mouth like you were blowing bubbles. Also put your finger between upper and lower teeth in front of your mouth and rest your teeth gently on the finger. A strengthening one is to push your lower jaw out so your bottom front teeth are in a position to bite your upper lip. You can do moist heat on the jaw or ice. Ibuprofen and muscle relaxers help. Biofreeze or mineral ice applied right in front of the ears on the jaw line help. There is a very special pain creme called keto10gaba5lido10 (247) that you can apply right to the jaw that works wonders. Massaging the jaw helps too and actually chiropractors some of them are trained to adjust the jaw. You can try tens or ultrasound on the jawline as well to settle down irritations to the muscles. I think I have tried every treatment under the sun and those things are the ones that helped me most, I avoided surgery by doing these.

Not much, I'm afraid. Wish I could help with other than aspirin
Keep your jaw relaxed, not clenched. Sometimes this is hard. Some people manage by keeping the tip of their tongue between their lips to remind them not to grind their teeth. And for some people, a heat pad works. Some like an ice pack instead. Sometimes gentle massage works.

And if you're like me, you may have to give up steak or anything that works the jaw as hard.
I'm a dentist.

NSAIDS like ibuprofen and aspirin help, as do warm compresses. You may also try a soft-chew diet for a week or so--avoiding chewing on anything harder than ground beef.

Other than that, you really should see your dentist.
I recently had this pain so bad that i was up vrying for 2 nights. Let me tell you the only relief I could get was NAPROXYN SODIUM, (Aleve), but available in stronger more potent form from a walk-in clinic. You need to treat it like arthritis.
