You can get nicorette and the various patches without a perscription. I quit by using the patch for about a week. I still went through nicotine withdrawl.but using the patch did mollify it to some extent.and more importantly you CAN'T use the patch and smoke at the same time. So when you put that patch on in the morning you are commited to not smoking that day. I stopped using the patch after about 2 weeks..I figured the worst was over by then...and I didn;t want any dependence on nicotine continuing. From then on I just told myself what a pu**y i'd be if I smoked. Everytime I wanted one I thought about how awful the last two weeks were..and how it would be all for nothing if I gave in. Quitting is hard.but it's not as hard as you sometimes hear it is. I was a 2 pack a day smoker for 12 years...and after about 2 months it got very easy. Just be determined.

I've heard this before. To quit, put a little bit of water in a jar with a lid. Every cigarette, put the butt in the water & close the jar. Then every time you want to smoke, you have to first take a big whiff out of that jar.
Just do it.
Well a friend of mines smoked for about seven years or even a bit more what he did is he bought a gazillion mints and gum and everytime he wanted a cigarette he would eat a mint or a piece of gum.
