Partially erupted wisdom teeth often have gum pouches over their tooth crowns that can get infected and cause discomfort. A poorly positioned wisdom tooth can improperly press against the second molar in front of it and trap food. This food trapping causes tooth decay and wisdom tooth infection. In some cases, the wisdom tooth or second molar dies and the patient gets a toothache which feels like wisdom tooth pain.
