when the dr. speaks to you about your sat rate.. what does he mean ?!

Question: i was with a friend when the Dr. said your sat rate is 90. The way he said it i felt that was not good as my friend is a heavy smoker, he has cut down from 3-4 packs a day to maybe little over 2 a day now. But will not quit.
Answers:
your O2 saturation rate is the % of oxygenated blood running through your body. Normal is around 98% to 99%

Other Answers:
I 'think' he means O2 Saturation Rate -- which means the amount of oxygen flowing through your blood.

for one, your doctor is overreacting. sats are okay for smokers if they are 88-100
he does need to quit smoking, let him know it just goes downhill from here!

That means the rate of oxygen that is in your blood. The test is painful they draw blood from your wrist and that will measure how much is in your blood. from 89 to 90 something is normal. when it gets below 85 is when they usually put you on external oxygen
