i have svt of the heart .question what does the test to shock the heart do? and!

I had SVT, but my condition was basically cured by catheter ablation. When I was in surgery, they had to shock my heart from the inside to figure out where in my heart the extra beats were coming from. They also had to use the defibrillator from the outside to put my heart back into rhythm. I was awake but I had a lot of drugs to relax me. The shock from the defibrillator just felt like a giant hiccup. I would recommend that you bring someone else along just in case you can't drive after the test. I would also bring someone along for emotional support if anything were to go wrong. If you have any questions regarding your testing, I would recommend calling your Doctor's office. Only they would know the 100% correct answer to your question.

Other Answers:
The defibrillator shocks your heart rhythm back to a normal sinus rhythm. You will be sedated before the test so I wouldn't drive after wards.
I have a defibrulator implanted in my chest. I have SVT. If you get a test that shocks you.that sucks! Hopefully you'll be sedated..i'd ask your doctor. I'm not sedated (wish i were) when i go into vtach and my icd shocks me (icd=implantable cardia defibrulator)-it feels like you are wearing a bullet proof vest and somebody shoots you in the chest.i'm on the ground (knowing its coming) trying to not panic (which only brings on another shock!)-also-depends on voltage and amp settings (ask your doctor)
