fats, especially trans-fats. You can identify those on ingredient lists by looking for "hydrogenated oil" or "partially hydrogenated oil". If it's listed in the first 3 or 4 ingredients, run.
Newer studies have shown that trans-fats raise the "bad" cholesterol and lower the "good" one, clog artery walls, increase heart disease. The Institute of Medicine, in 2006, recommended to keep trans-fat intake as low as possible. FDA asked manufacturers to have it in ingredient labels by end of 2006.
Sugar is bad for us in extremes, because it gives us more carbohydrates (calories), and also jacks around your blood sugar level. Which, contrary to pop belief, does not cause diabetes (obesity is chief cause there). Short term, sugar overload just makes us feel crappy, because after the initial buzz, the level crashes. Then, tired, grumpy, can't concentrate, headachy. It can cause low blood sugar problems.
