Well it is a tweleve inch needle stuck into your spine. It doesn't feel to pleasing. And I didn't get no pain killers before or after. I hope that you are just wondering.

There is a numbing medicine they give you for the surface that does ease the pain. Sometimes, though when the tap gets near the spinal cord there is a feeling like a pinch that goes away very quickly. It's a pretty short procedure.

The short answer is that you can request a numbing medicine before having a lumbar puncture.

I have never had a spinal tap without numbing medicine; however, my infant had one when only a couple of months old. It obviously caused him a lot of discomfort, although that could've been from fear, too. But, my guess is that a spinal tap is not that terribly painful, given that patients are only given numbing medicine, rather than something stronger.
