I had those things when I was a kid-many years ago,it's a big round hard pump on top of the skin, very sore,as it festers a puss head forms and the pressures really hurts, if you go to the doctor, he'll lance it to get the core out, other wise it will come back. But o lord what a relief just to get the pressure off, they say don't mash it,I sterlized tip end of needle and poke couple holes in top of it,put a finger on each side and pull away with pressure. With luck you'll get the core with the puss. Put some alcohol or peroxide on it afterwords,I was told it's cause of bad blood but this day and time who knows, I wish you well. Carolyn

It looks rather like a giant pimple that has come to a head. Initially it may look like a giant bug bite or a hive, since it's just a red bump, but as a boil develops, it will eventually open up and release a quantity of pus. All the signs of inflammation are there, i.e., it's red, hot to the touch, painful, and swollen up. If you have a boil, you should consult a physician, who will prescribe antibiotics to clear the infection. They may also "lance" it, i.e., create an opening in it, if it hasn't done this by itself, so it can drain.
