is bipolar hereditary?!

Question:
Answers:
Genetic or hereditary factors contribute to the risk of bipolar disorder. Studies have demonstrated that the prevalence of bipolar disorder is higher among the parents of bipolar patients. However, hereditary factors are not the only cause of bipolar disorder.

Studies of identical twins suggest that both genes and other factors play a role in the cause of bipolar disorder. Identical twins share all the same genes. If bipolar disorder were caused entirely by genes, then the identical twin of a patient with the illness would always develop the illness, which is not the case. However, if one twin has bipolar disorder, the other twin is more likely to develop the illness. There is a slightly greater risk of developing the disease among siblings as well.

Other than genetic factors, there are no other known risk factors for bipolar disorder.

I work with students who are emotionally disturbed. trust me on this one. if the child has it I can guarantee one of the parents does. (NOT saying that all people with bi-polar issues are emotionally disturbed. I have friends who are and with regular meds they are fine.)

Yes it can be.

Bipolar disorder has a strong genetic influence. Of those with bipolar disorder, approximately 50% of them have a parent with a history of clinical depression. When a mother or father has bipolar disorder, their child will have a 25% chance of developing some type of clinical depression. If both parents have bipolar disorder, the chance of their child also developing bipolar disorder is between 50% and 75%. Brothers and sisters of those with bipolar disorder may be 8 to 18 times more likely to develop bipolar disorder, and 2 to 10 times more likely to develop major depressive disorder than others with no such siblings.
