what's a suicide gene?!
Question: in terms of microbiology? and what does it do?
Answers:
It causes the apoptosis (programed cell dead) of cell.
It may be physiological. For example, during the formation of our hands, cells between fingers undergo apoptosis. If not, we'll end up having webbed hands.
Or it may be pathological. For example, some viruses trigger this gene and cause cell dead.
Sometimes, defective cells are ordered to undergo suicide. If this gene is suppressed, it will result in uncontrolled cell replication, as in cancer.
