If you seriously want to know, you need to read the book "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" by Toni Weschler, visit a FAM website (like Ovusoft), and preferably take classes (available to even non-catholics through the catholic diocees). The average individual can not give you enough information over the net to make your charting reliable for acheivement or avoidance.

There are many signs on impending ovulation; cervical fluid, cervical position (& texture), OS opening, salivary ferning, etc. Some women experience spotting and cramps during ovulation but this is *not* a reliable sign. You can confirm ovulation has occoured and that you are infertile for the remainder of your cycle with basal temp charting; the temp will jump and remain above the previous temps by 3+ days. You have to chart all the signs through teh whole cycle for it to work though. a hodge podge chart won't tell you anything.

Sperm can live in the female reproductive system as long as 5 days so you are actually fertile for a full 8 days of every cycle. The Luteal Phase (post-ovulatory progesterone dominant pahse) is roughly 12-18 days and stays pretty consistant for each individual woman. Rather than ending with bleeding, a new cycle actually starts with the first day of bleeding.

It takes most women about 3 months of careful charting (w/o the disruption of sexual relations) to understand their own fertile norms. After that couples can be intimate and use back up or refrain during the fertile phase w/ minimal risk.

The most effective way is through the use ofa Basal thermometer
i was told count from the first day you get your period up to day 14 and 2 days before and after that day your ovulating or you can just buy an ovulating test :)
14 days is true if you are a regular 28 days woman. But normally that is not true.

First check if you are regular? if it's perfect. 14 days after the first day of your period.

If not. You are ovulating exactly 14 days before your period come. that means if your period come every 30 days, you are ovulating in the 16 day.

Experience
Usually about 2 weeks before your period. Also, your discharge turns and looks like clear egg-whites.
THERES A PINCHING FEELING IN YOUR SIDES.
It's when you are the horny-est! You are wetter than normal too!
The key sign is that the vaginal mucous thickens. The other advice give here to count on the calendar works out pretty good too - but to be 100% sure in the case you are trying to conceive buy an Ovulation Test - available at Walmart, Brooks etc.

It has you count 14 days from your last period and then start with the 7 day test. This is a surefire way to figure out when to get pregnant - it worked for me!

now if you are just in general trying to NOT get pregnant - well then.of course the test is not feasible! So monitor the mucous, avoid unprotected sex around the 14th day of your cycle or skip it all together just for that week.

Sperm can live inside the uterus up to 72 HOURS! Meaning - that if you ovulated AFTER you had sex - you could still get pregnant. So basically - use a condom - or if you are trying to conceive - have sex every other day of the 2nd week of your cycle. (or every day just for fun! haha )and/or buy the test and then have sex on the day that the test comes out positive and the next day.
