could a person with diabetes test positive for alcohol after drinking a lot of a!

Question: A friend of mine is not taking medication for diabetes because he has no money or insurance. He drank apple juice to try to keep his sugar level good and then he tested positive for alcohol. Could this be true?
Answers:
You friend needs to figure out an approach towards controlling his blood sugar -- and apple juice is really not it.

Is he eligible for any type of insurance coverage (be it employer, Medicare, Medicaid, Disabled worker, state subsidized low income, etc.)?

If not, I would try and hook him up with a community clinic. They offer treatment on a sliding scale fee basis. In turn, there may also be discounted programs for some of the meds.

It is not really possible to overstate the importantence of treatment -- blindness, loss of limbs and heart disease are all outcomes for uncontrolled diabetes (as are comas and death).

To answer your question, my recollection (and I am not certain) is that the breath test may show a false positive (especially if ketones were high -- which would itself probably be a very bad thing). Also (and this is real long shot but I have read about it) -- a diabetic throughing off lots of glucouse when combined with UTI -- especially yeast -- might test positive using a UA for alcohol.

Additional Detail --
Good luck to you and your friend -- I hope you are able to reconnect and help him seek some care. If they kicked him out for the alcohol issue, it may be worth talking to the staff there. I think they need to be aware of diabetes issues (which is to say that it could be a false positive although it could be that he consumed alcohol -- only he knows for sure).
