bilirubin of 2.5 is taht dangerously high?!

Question:

Here's an answer for someone who had a total bilirubin of 3.5, from a MedHelp forum:
"I assume from your e-mail that the other liver tests that you list were normal. This assumption would exclude condition such as hepatitis as a cause of your problem. Are there any family mebers with liver disease?
I do not think that you should be unnecessarily worried by the high bilrubin. The most likely dignosis is Gilbert's disease, a benign, congenital disease, in which there are abnormalities in the removal of bilirubin, a breakdown product of hemoglobin. Gilbert's disease is found in about 5% of the population and is often an incidental finding, as may have occurred in your case.
The other possibility is that you have a low grade hemolysis [premature breakdown of the red blood cells]. A combinationof blood tests should be able to determine if you have hemolysis. If you are anxious regarding the bilirubin, contact your physician ask for the hemolysis workup to be done now.

As labs have all different reference ranges of what is normal and what isn't, it would be best to ask your doctor what this particular level means.
