is valium a good drug to help schizophrenia?!

Question: My grandma is schitzophrenic and she was perscribed valium and although i am not a doctor i have read alot about this drug and i also know alot about it because i have taken it before and i was wondering if this drug actually helps the schitzophrenia.
Answers:
In general it isn't the first choice, but it is used sometimes, especially in the especially for treatment of acute psychosis.

Valium has more side effects with older persons, so keep an eye out for this.

But the best thing to do is to talk with her physician about it if you can. He/she might have a good reason for using it.

Other Answers:
depends on the person, and their chemistry
Valium makes feel horrible- like I can't control myself and I become violent but thats just me I had it for anxity though I don't know bout schizophrenia
sorry
Valium is for anxiety..not a good choice in theory.
Not really ... it claims them so that they chill out.. does not fix the chemical imbalance.
try Zyprexa (olanzapine)

Valium is a long-working tranquilizer from the group of meds called Benzodiazepines. They're very addictive and tolerance to it's working results in higher doses for the required effect.
Your grandmother should be taking an anti-psychotic for her disorder. Most meds for schizophrenia have a calming effect in themselves so valium would seem like something to keep her quiet.not to actually help her.
I was addicted to valium for panic attacks for several years. If your grandmother takes them, I hope it's not for long until she gets proper medication. Good luck to you all.
It's better than crack. Valium is addictive, it's a barbituate designed to slow her crazyass down, but it won't treat the schizo. She needs lithium and other drugs for that. Go look it up in a medical dictionary online. Stop asking this dumb board about medical issues.
