Does anyone here suffer from atypical depression?!

Question:
i asked a question afew days ago about depression because i have been feeling REALLY depressed, but not all day..
anyway, i was led to researching atypical depression, and i am going to talk to my therapist about all of this this thursday becasue i think i might have it.

my question is

what were your symptoms? and how often did you feel really depressed? (especially when you first decided to seek treatment)

thanks, if you can all give me any information beyond my question just about atypical depression i would really appreciate it
Answers:
I dont recall if you mentioned your age, but mine started as my hormone levels changed in my 30's. It was not everyday, but most days, and usually when I was finished for the day, and had time to relax. Ended up on Lexapro. then switched to Wellbutrin. (gained weight on lex)

best thing I ever did.
Ask your therapist to recommend a Psychiatrist.

I have had atypical depression all my life, and I'm 56 now.

Don't get hung up on whether your depression is typical or atypical. Also, don't be overly concerned about what other people experience.

About 6% of the U.S. population is seriously depressed at any given time. That is about 18 million people, and this doesn't count those who have bipolar disorder. You can be sure that a lot of people have depression similar to yours.

If you want to contact others like you, ask your therapist to recommend support groups you could join, or find them yourself. You will be able to find online support groups, if you think that would be helpful.

=====

Atypical Depression (AD) is a subtype of Major Depression characterized by mood reactivity — being able to experience improved mood in response to positive events. In contrast, suffers of "melancholic" depression generally cannot experience positive moods, even when good things happen. Additionally, atypical depression is characterized by reversed vegetative symptoms, namely over-eating and over-sleeping.

Despite its name, "atypical" depression is actually the most common subtype of depression — up to 40% of the depressed population may be classified as having atypical depression.

I just have depression. The weather has been really bad lately and that has alot to do with it-trust me- ive been at this game for a long long time! Im "bonafied" out there with depression. Sometimes I just hate life other times im ok with it. Up one day down the next. I dont take medication because the side effects are worse then the depression to start with. Great-got rid of the depression- but now i have psychosis! That is a real side effect of anit-depressants! BEWARE!! Ya know, you just need to be aware of how your feeling and dont let yourself ever slide past that magic point of no return. That is imperative! Depressants can will themselves to die, ive seen of my own two eyes before. It aint pretty.

According to the DSM-IV, as opposed to major depression, the patient with atypical features experiences mood reactivity, with improved mood when something good happens. In addition, the DSM-IV mandates at least two of the following: increase in appetite or weight gain (as opposed to the reduced appetite or weight loss of "typical" depression); excessive sleeping (as opposed to insomnia); leaden paralysis; and sensitivity to rejection.

I suffer from depression since I was 17 now I am 23 and I was on PROZAC I don't like the side effects so I rather not to take any medicine whatsoever .. what works for me is to concentrate on my goals and look always forward to the days ahead, and not think too much about the future or the past. focus on what I want and have helps my depression go away or at least the path is smother. and I can control it more plus if you practice a religious you will find it easier to deal with it and you can even heal completely from it, I am actually living the healing experience myself..
