do antidepressants work? how do u feel on them? What feels differant?!

Question:

Answers:
Yes, anti-depressants do work in helping to relieve depression. But, the number one question is, Why are you depressed? The purpose of anti-depressants is not to "bandage" the feelings one is experiencing. But, aid the person in feeling better so, that, they have the strength and fortitude to deal with what is depressing them. Yes, it, possibly, will take several attempts at finding the one that will work for you under the direction of a psychiatrist. All major hospitals in major cities have a psychiatric dept. where one can be seen & receive treatment on a sliding financial scale. A muddiness in thinking, irritability, crying, loss of appetite, loss of sleep, a high vulnerability in emotional situations are all signs of a depressed or chronically depressed state. Sometimes, two (2) anti-depressants are prescribed. One for sleeping at night and the other sustains one during the day. But, only a doctor - preferably, a psychiatrist - will beable to prescribe & observe how you are doing on these medications. Or, suggest alternative medications. The first & most important step is up to you; taking action and making the appointment, now. The defining moment when you will take charge of you and face whatever anguish is creating the depressed feelings. It will create a wave of confidence and self-esteem plus strength to move on to more positive goals which, by God, bring happiness. Best of Luck. You can do it.

I take them and they don't really seem to work at all. Sorry.

Some do. I was on Wellbutrin and it helped, had little sexual side effects but caused alot of anxiety, enough anxiety that i had to take anti-anxiety meds also.

I am not as emotional, I tried to stop taking them one time and that was a big mistake!

It depends on the type of medication you are taking and the dosage. Some medication will work and others will give you side affects depending on how your body takes them.

As for do they work, if you find the right one it should work. As for how you feel, you should feel not extremely happy, but about average. Not depressed, but not smiling at everything either.

I fought taking andidepressants for years. I had a hard time admitting that I didnt have the willpower to make myself better, that there was really something wrong with me. I have now been medicated for over 3 years and have never felt better. Just dont give up when the first one doesn't work, because it can take several tries to find the right one for you.

I take Zoloft and it helps me a lot with my depression and anxiety. I know that I need them because if I don't take them I get very irritated with most everything and I feel a terrible sense of hopelessness. So, I faithfully take my meds to help me cope with life, plus it keeps me from making my family miserable!

I took a anti-depressant that worked wonders I believe it was called: Fluoxetine. Before I took this I was suicidal and attempted to take my life many times, I also suffered from nightmares, and insomnia but after taking the pill for a while it all went away. Of course it has side affects but what drug dosen't?

They are wonderful. THey right the chemical imbalances in the brain. I went to the doctor because I didn't feel myself. I had to tell myself to get showered and dressed each day. I was incredibly sad, avoiding doing anything and people. He put me on a low dose of Zoloft. It worked for a few weeks and then I started to feel the same way. Doc upped the dose and now I feel great again. My husband I spent the last couple days building brick planters around the house. I felt strong and could haul those bricks around the yard. I look forward to things and life is much better. I didn't realize how much I was missing until it started comming back.

I take Zoloft and find that it really makes my mood more even. I too decided to just stop taking them - thinking they did nothing and I became irratable and depressed.

yes!if you take the right ones for you.it takes time to figure it out.took over a year and several different meds.to find what work for me .and i feel normal.find a doctor who will work with you not just throw pills at you .a good doctor who will listen is VERY IMPORTANT!!

yes antidepresents work, they work if you want them to work you have to let them do half of the work and you do the other half of the work if ure willing to do your part of the work they will work. When i take them and let them work i feel great .I felll like any other people would with no problems on my mind . My mind feels free not worrying about anything.

Yes i found them to work for me. I take Zoloft, have been for just under a year now. I guess the main thing is I found them to make me "stress out" and worry about things less - not in a bad way though. I didnt want to take antidepressants and refused to for quite some time, but now that I am on them, I feel heaps better. Dont get me wrong, they're not some "wonder drug" that will solve all of your problems after taking one, you do need to put the effort in yourself aswell, but for me it just took the edge off.

some do work, i was on paxil which made me feel worse, now that im on celexa i actually feel normal, i didnt leave my house for nearly a year it was so bad, but now i feel just like a i used to

Your brain processes emotions, thoughts, impressions, physical sensations by releasing chemicals. Your whole body relies on it’s own internal chemistry to regulate everything: we are chemical! When you are happy your brain releases endorphins, which is a chemical that makes you feel good. When you are depressed your brain sends signals to you in the form of chemicals to tell you, you are unhappy.

Look at it this way. If your tooth aches because of a cavity and you take Advil or some other pain supressant, this chemical stops the signal of pain. But it won’t take care of the cavity. Keep taking pain killers everyday and you won’t feel a thing but that does not mean the cavity is going away.

If you are depressed that means you are not happy with something. By just taking medication you are stopping the signal, but you’re not taking care of the real cause.

Taking the medication helps you stop feeling depressed, but if you don't examine your situation then you’re not really dealing with whatever is causing that depression.
