why do some diabetics take insulin and others take oral medications?!

Question:

Answers:
Oral medications are useless for Type I diabetics, who are generally diagnosed in early childhood, not because of obesity or bad lifestyle choices. They take insulin because their pancreas doesn't make any.

Type II diabetics more often just take oral medications, and whine about it like it's the end of the world, and only progress to insulin injections when their refuse to get with the program and manage their diet and exercise properly.

Other Answers:
It is all in the disease process. The more advanced usually use insulin.

Many people with diabetes take insulin to control their blood sugar (glucose). Insulin cannot be taken by mouth because it would be destroyed by digestion. Instead, most people who need insulin take insulin shots. Other ways to take insulin include insulin pens, insulin jet injectors, and insulin pumps. Someday people with diabetes may no longer need needles or shots to take insulin; researchers are testing news ways to get insulin into the bloodstream.

me type 1

I am taking tablets because my pancreas is still working, but not fully. For people who has to use needles, the pancreas has "turned off". Best wishes to better health.

I am a Type 2 diabetic. Some of my younger friends and relatives are Type 1 because they were diagnosed at a younger age.

It is based on the individual. Some are able to control their diabetes via medication only and others require insulin to control it. My father has it; he was required to use insulin and medication in the beginning. Now, he only requires medication, a healthy diet, exercise, and he also lost alot of weight.

my doctor has me on 2 pills daily but I have talked to some people that prefer insulin to the pills, it seems to control it much better.

some take diabetes and some take pills because there are 2 types of diabetes, type 1 is where the pancrease can no longer produce insulin, type 2 is where the pancrease produces the insulin but cannot use it.

2 reasons:
- Some people are diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in this case the pancreatic beta cells are not functional and do not produce any insulin. Insulin is a hormone that lowers blood sugar when it gets too high. We also have a hormone(glucagon) that raises blood sugar levels when it gets too low. Since Type 1 diabetics do not produce insulin they need to inject it. A great deal of the oral medications will not work for Type 1 diabetics because they need some insulin output. Some directly stimulate insulin secretion. Other medications work by increasing tissue sensitivity to insulin therby making insulin more effective. These do not require a working pancreas.

Type 2 Diabetes is a metabolic disease that usually occurs as the body becomes less responsive to blood sugar levels. In other words, the high glucose levels are not producing the adequate insulin response. You get decreased insulin sensitivity and pancreatic burnout due to a compensation of the pancreas. It is a vicious circle. This disease process is amplified by an increase in fatty acids. It's a dangerous cycle and used to be a disease targeted at the older population but now there are some children that are being diagnosed. This can be prevented by healthy living habits. Type 2 diabetics will typically start on oral meds because they have a functioning pancreas and can control their disease process if they live right. If it is uncontrolled they can eventually lose pancreatic function and have to take insulin.
