margarine

Butter. People who substitute margarine for butter have a 50% increase of heart-related disease. Hydrogenated oils are bad for you. Although butter has cholesterol, in moderation it is better for you than margarine. Here is the article:

For years, margarine was pushed as a
heart healthy alternative to butter. Butter
was known to be filled with cholesterol
and saturated fat that were bad for blood
cholesterol and increased the risk of
heart disease. Because margarine was made from
unsaturated vegetable oils, it was
assumed it would be better for the heart.
Unfortunately, research showed that this
wasn’t necessarily the case. Some forms
of margarine - specifically the hard stick
margarine - were actually worse for the
heart than butter. This was because they
contained large amounts of trans fats.
The Nurses’ Health Study found that
women who ate 4 teaspoons of stick
margarine a day had a 50 percent greater
risk of heart disease than women who ate
margarine only rarely. (4)
So, what should you choose to use? The
best option is to use liquid vegetable oils
or a soft tub margarine that is labeled
trans fat free or non-hydrogenated.
If you choose a soft margarine, be sure
that it’s also low in saturated fat.

Just read this today in my school's nutrition newsletter

Whole foods are better for you than processed foods. Butter might have a lot of fat and high in cholesterol but it is easier for your body to process than margarine. Moderation of either one is best for you.

butter is healthier b/c it doesnt have as much hydrogenated oil. but neither is really good for you is you eat tons

Margarine may be healthier but butter is a lot better tasting. I cant stand the taste of margarine, and if it means that I'm a little less healthier so what because i don't gain weight anyway. So I would stick with butter.

margarine is better for you because it has less fat but butter taste better !

Why is margarine "bad" for you?

A. When margarine or shortening is manufactured, vegetable oils are stabilized to a more solid form by a process called "hydrogenation". This is simply adding one hydrogen molecule to each fatty acid molecule of the vegetable oil. By changing the molecule's structure, the oil becomes solid or semi-solid. This takes a "good" thing (the fatty acids our bodies need) and makes them "bad". Recent studies published in the JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association) showed that margarine and other hydrogenated vegetable oils not only raise your "bad" cholesterol levels (LDL) , they lower the "good" cholesterol levels (HDL).

But isn't butter a source of cholesterol?

A. Yes. However, in the grand scheme of things, it is now believed that the hydrogenated fats in margarine actually have greater health risks for you than butter does, when used in moderation.
Here's something that is better than butter OR margarine:
BETTER BUTTER (version 3)

1 pound butter, softened
1 cup Safflower oil
1 tablespoon liquid lecithin (optional)
1 teaspoon salt
1 400 IU Vitamin E
And it tastes just as good as margarine.

butter may have more fat, but it's the good type of fat!

They're both "bad" for you. Go with butter. Nothing beats the taste benefit.

-MARGARINE Want to know Why? Read below!

Margarine might look like butter, but there are some major differences between these two fats.
Fats(lipids) basically are devided into two groups:
1-saturated: those lipids that have the maximum number of Hydrogen in the bonds made with Carbon (also have single bonded Carbons) ex. animal fat, butter
2-unsaturated: those lipids that have double bonds among their carbon atoms and still can get hydrogen atoms.
ex. olive oil

when hydrogens are added to some kind of liquid plant oil, we call this process hydrogenization which causes the liquid oil to become solid and as hard as a butter.

In conclusion,
