It has caused epidemics and outbreaks and no vaccine is available for preventing it. The name 'Chikungunya' is derived from the native word for the disease in which the patient lies 'doubled up' due to severe joint pains. Epidemics have occured in many African countries, including Tanzania, where it was first isolated and also in Thailand and in some parts of India including Calcutta, Madras etc.
