I've had allergy shots for 12 years. Not retested since. When do the shots pea!

Question:
I'm thinking the shots have done all they will do and are no longer effective. Any thoughts? I think I should stop the shots. I can't get any straight answers from my allergist.
Answers:
Shots are supposed to help you build an immunity to allergens. They are not designed to cure symptoms of allergies. So in actuality, the longer you take it, the more immune you SHOULD be.and as a result you should no longer be allergic to what you were taking the shots for.

If you were taking the correct dosage frequently enough, most doctors only require that you take them for 3 years. At that time you should no longer be affected by the allergens.

Other Answers:
What do you mean by shots? If you mean antihistamines they only last for a couple of days tops, steroids last longer. If you're talking about multiple exposure to allergens (something they do if you're allergic to a specific allergen) it's supposed to stop your allergy permanently

Sometimesyou grow out of allergies and don't need the shots any more. Get a new doctor if he can't answer your questions for all the money you pay him.

I guess it would depend on your own body, but I took shots for 3 years and weaned myself off. My allergies never got any worse, and there was a huge improvement from before I started taking them. You could try to quit taking them and see what happens. If your reactions are still bad, get back on the shots.

I got allergy shots for 2 two years, twice a week. Before i got them my allergies were terrible. I couldn't even keep my eyes open hardly when i went to the country cuz they got so swollen and itched so bad. After i stopped getting the shots i didnt do that anymore. So the shots probably arent helping too much anymore cuz your probably immune to them by now and would be fine without them.

You need to be retested. You can change what you are allergic to. I was retested and needed to change the shots I was taking.
Have you worked up to the maintenance level for the shots?
