If you are seeing a psychiatrist and a psychologist you are on the right track. JHust because you are on medication, doesn't mean you will have to be on it forever. Work with your doctors to figure out what is best for you. And if medication isn't something you are too into, let them know.

Good diet, and exercise can help. Doing nice things for others can make you feel better. but some parts of depression are just biological - so medi ation is needed. Don't feel bad if you need it either.

Good luck with this.

I fought taking medication for years. but I've now been on Wellbuterin for 3 years and I have never been happier. It took me a long time to admit that I needed help, that it was something that I couldn't handle on my own. especially to admit that there was something wrong with my head! You need to look ad depression as a medical condition, just as if you were diagnosed with diabetes or high blood pressure. There is something wrong with your body, and there are medications available to help. The key is, you are not alone, and you do not have to continue to suffer.

I definitely understand your hesitation about medication. I'd use it as a last resort, but if you need to use it, use it. I was on Paxil for a while.and that stuff really messed me up. Please don't go on that one!

You may be able to avoid medication, but you should still seek medical help. Speak with a psychiatrist, let them know you are wanting to stay off of medications, hopefully they will be able to help you through therapy, but if the psychiatrist thinks you need to be medicated, you should follow their advice.

Do some volunteer work. Study after study has proven that it is one of the most effective ways to overcome depression. Call any charity in your town and I am sure that they can use some extra help!

Sex is probably the best anti-despresent there is! ;)

Please do what your Doctor orders.

If you are paying a psychiatrist and a psychologist for professional advice, why are you asking here?

Don't listen to the potheads. Jail will just make you more depressed.

You know, hun, it happens to all of us. Depression is a natural emotion that can strike at any time. You can't really say that meds or couseling will help. They do, but to a certain extent. ALl you really need to do is find something that really sparks your interest and keep your mind off of things that really bother you. I know that sounds like it's easier said than done, but you have to want it in order to do it. You cant have some therapist tell you to stop being depressed, unless you want to be. I would not recommend getting on any antidepressants because once you do, you wont stop!! I have friends who are serioiusly addicted to the drugs and cant let go. to me depression is a phase and once something wonderful comes along, which it will, you will be just fine. but for now, just focus on somehitng that you really like to do and don't worry about things. The more you think about stuff that bothers you, the more it will bother you. Take care!

sometimes when you are feeling depress they are certain things you would like to talk about or have someone there to say it to. but sometimes there is no one you can trust. my doctor told me when im depress to write my problems down. and its the same as if i were saying it to someone. after you can throw it away. or burn it. i heard of people that tryed it and they feel better. but dont let get out of control in some cases medication will be best.

hi. you're right, medication for depression should be avoided at all costs, except as a last resort. this might be way out there, but i've found that exercise is a great way to fight off depression. when exercising, your body releases enzymes in your blood that counters depression.

you end up having good health and a good feeling about yourself.

good luck and best wishes.

Why the heck are people saying to avoid medication at all costs? These are the types that say, "Oh, just get over it. Stop being sad and be happy!" If this has been going on for a while, it is probably depression, and no matter how much people say to find something to make you happy, exercise, etc., if you have TRUE depression you will not be motivated to bother to DO these things! I never wanted to get out of bed or go to work, would cry for no reason, etc. I've been on meds since 1996. It has been a lifesaver! Please talk with your psychiatrist and see what he/she says. Taking meds for depression is not a bad thing, regardless of what other people (who haven't been in your shoes!) think!
